Historial completo del Derby
Por CFGD  El granjero Henry Wicker, natural de Epsom, descubría en 1618 un manantial en las dunas que resultó producir un agua mineral que –al parecer- tenía propiedades curativas. Esta circunstancia atrajo a la masa capitalina que acudía permanentemente a lo que nuestros abuelos llamaban “tomar las aguas”. La constante e ingente presencia de tanto londinense puede que acabara con la bucólica paz del lugar pero también fue la causa de que en 1661 se celebrara en los Downs el primer meeting de carreras de caballos registrado que, desde entonces, pasó a ser una costumbre, de uso habitual. Este estado de cosas duró hasta que en el verano de 1779, Edward Stanley, duodécimo Lord Derby, organizó una carrera para él y sus amigos dedicada a las potrancas de 3 años, sobre milla y media de distancia y a la que puso el nombre de su finca: el Oaks. Así comenzaba el mayor espectáculo del mundo. Un espectáculo que precede al uso del ferrocarril como medio de transporte habitual o a la colonización de Australia o a la independencia de los Estados Unidos de América del Norte.
El éxito de esa carrera para hembras promovió la creación, al año siguiente, de otra de iguales características abierta a machos y hembras que hoy –222 años después- aún conocemos como DERBY. De cómo se creó y bautizó la gran carrera ya les hice partícipes el pasado año por estas fechas, por lo que no parece oportuno reiterarlo. Pero lo que quizá no se conozca tanto es que el DERBY se corrió hasta 1784 sobre la milla y sólo a partir de esa fecha sobre la prevista milla y media, motivo por el que el Tattenham Corner –la más famosa curva de la Tierra, en la que se adquiere gloria o miseria- no existió hasta precisamente ese 1784 de referencia. Generaciones de caballos, jockeys, preparadores y propietarios, generaciones de aficionados se han ido sucediendo a través de más de dos siglos en el mismo lugar, en la misma fecha, con idéntico afán: contemplar el mayor espectáculo deportivo que pueda pensarse, asistir al DERBY. Un DERBY que hay que agradecer a Inglaterra, tanto por su creación como por su pervivencia, casi en idénticas condiciones a como lo parieron. Un DERBY que juzgo suficiente atributo como para que la humanidad perdone a la “Pérfida” todos sus excesos. Personalmente, siempre he estado dispuesta a hacerlo. No publicamos el pasado año más que un historial parcial de la carrera por lo que incluímos aquí el historial completo con el añadido del nombre de la ganadora del Oaks en cada año.
